SLC Eats: Mellow Mushroom

May 17, 2017

Zach & I ventured out to Mellow Mushroom for a recent food adventure date night last Friday.

Mellow Mushroom isn't TECHNICALLY a local joint, but there's only one location in Utah, so I don't count it as a typical "chain" restaurant. Plus it's in Sugarhouse and I always love any excuse to go there (minus the parking - Sugarhouse parking is always a nightmare!)

While we went there specifically for pizza, they also have a ton of sandwiches, salads, and other offerings. Every pizza was SO unique and combinations I'd never heard of before!

I couldn't decide on just one, so I had my pizza split in two - one half Thai Dye (grilled curry chicken, mozzarella, roma tomatoes, onion, basil, cucumbers, and a swirl of Thai chili sause), and one half Maui Wowie (pesto, ham, pineapple, jerk chicken, banana peppers, bacon, and mozzarella). Totally different!! Zach is not super adventurous about food and is generally a strict pepperoni consumer, so he branched out (slightly haha) and got the Mighty Meaty (red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham & bacon).

I think I win for being more colorful & creative, right?

And just to get this out of the way, we ordered a fruit lemon/limeade and it was terrible. So I didn't bother taking a picture. Just heads up, don't order it haha.

Ok so pizza - the pizzas are pretty dang big! We both ordered mediums and had PLENTY to take home for leftovers.

Crust: I LOVED the crust. It was crunchy on the outside, but still perfectly soft inside, thick enough to hold all of the toppings, without being too thick! Plus, they brush some kind of amazing herbs & spices over the top, so the crust tastes like amazing breadsticks just by itself! Definitely my favorite crust so far in Utah!

For being a strict pepperoni fan, Zach liked his pizza with all of the extra meat! He'd still prefer a plain pepperoni pizza anyday, but would be happy ordering this whenever we come back! Personally, it was too much meat for me (and I don't love ground beef on pizza), but that's just personal preference.

I was SO pleased with the pizza I'd ordered! I couldn't decide which I liked better! I kept switching types in between bites and just couldn't pick a favorite!

Mowie Wowie: Hawaiian is my go-to favorite pizza and I love pesto, so combining both into one was a dream! Adding in the jerk chicken and bacon put it over the top for me. The banana peppers were a bit too much for me - normally I love them, but I felt they were too much and overwhelmed the surrounding flavors - so next time I'd just order it without the peppers so I could taste more of everything else!

Thai Dye: BLEW MY FREAKING MIND. I could eat curry all day everyday, so I was especially stoked to get some on my pizza! Now that I've had curry on pizza, I don't know if I can go back to traditional toppings! Having the cucumber & basil was a refreshing addition and the crunch of the cucumbers was really satisfying. I'm salivating over here just thinking about this pizza!

Overall, Mellow Mushroom was pretty good - creative menu items, awesome crust. We'd only go back when we're in the mood for non-traditional pizza, so we are still on the lookout for a great traditional pizza place in Utah! Let me know if you have some recommendations!
